Homeroom Parents, or "Room Moms," help the teacher in a variety of ways. This
is a time-intensive but very rewarding job! Here's some of what you can expect:
- Stay in constant communication with the teacher
- Keep in touch with all of the classroom parents
- Keep in touch with other Room Moms in your group
- Send updates to other Room Moms
- Prepare and send handouts and/or e-mail messages to all parents as
necessary
- Send volunteer requests and classroom updates in Tuesday folders
- Gather volunteers for different events, including PTO-sponsored events
(lunches, carnival, book fair, etc.)
- Prepare information for the monthly newsletter as necessary
- Help in the classroom as needed
- Contact parents of new students to welcome them
- Organize parties and events and ask for and manage volunteers
- Organize field trips and ask for and manage volunteers
- Help with various projects for the teacher as needed
- Help organize or get volunteers to decorate the classroom wall in the
hallway, ideally each 4-6 weeks
- Bring any last-minute supplies that the teacher might need
- Occasionally monitor the classroom for the teacher
- Organize a lunch for grade-level teachers
- Volunteer for and contribute to grade-level sponsored Fat Friday
- Collect money for various events and submit it to the appropriate person
for collection
- Order and distribute classroom t-shirts
- Plan parties as necessary throughout the year
- Communicate with the teacher on classroom needs
- Communicate with parents on upcoming class events/parties
- Prepare and distribute the class list
- Find one or more volunteers to prepare Tuesday folders (or do it
yourself if no one volunteers)
- Coordinate any volunteer efforts that represent the class (such as
lunchroom duty, playground duty, Fat Fridays, etc.)
- Obtain profile on the teacher so you know his or her likes and dislikes,
birthday, anniversary, etc.
- Organize the class gift for the teacher at Christmas, on his or her
birthday, and at end of year
- Spoil the teacher!
We recommend finding out what your teacher’s needs are before the "Back to
School" night so you can prepare a sign-up sheet in advance and have your
classroom parents select the events and items in which they are interested. This
usually includes things like the following:
- Name, address, e-mail address, and phone number of each student (and
parent), and permission to include them on the class roster that you will
generate and distribute
- Class items such as supplies, snacks, etc. per teacher's request
- Someone to volunteer to do the Tuesday folders--muy importante!!
Later they’ll be other things like shirt sizes for class t-shirts, organizing
class parties, teacher gifts, and the teacher’s info sheet, which could include
things like his or her birthday, favorite restaurants, hobbies, etc. There are
lots of other things as the year develops so you should check with your teacher
periodically to discover other needs.
